Case Study - Camstradden Primary School

Use of Learning Stances

Camstradden Primary School was formed from the merger of Summerhill and Pinewood Primary schools and Chesters Nursery School.  The new campus was opened on 20 April 2006.

In order to prepare fully for the merger teachers at both schools, with the support of senior managers, profiled all pupils using the Learning Stance Framework which is part of the Motivated School. Initially all children were placed in their default learning stance, but teachers then went on to consider the learning stances that pupils could achieve and the support required to move pupils on to these more positive learning stances.

The information gathered about pupils' learning stances was then used to facilitate the formation of classes in the new amalgamated school and target appropriate support for pupils using the teaching hooks for different stances outlined in the Motivated School.

Head teacher Margaret Henderson and her staff are pleased with the results so far.  Appropriate class balance has been achieved and suitable support has been provided for pupils.  They feel that this is a more holistic approach to supporting young people.
