The Learning Stances

How do we make pupils want to learn?

By meeting pupils needs for

Autonomy
i.e. self determination in deciding what they do, sense of personal initiative;

Agency

i.e. developing and exercising their skills of controlling their environment, and affiliation, i.e. feeling connected through pro social relationships.

How do we do that?

Key ideas

1. Frame tasks as a learning process not an evaluation.

2. Instill belief that ability is changeable, that they'll progress if they apply and that there are many ways to succeed.

3. Focus on specific aspects of competency that are important to the pupil for self-efficacy in goal achievement.

4. Treat mistakes as essential parts of learning by linking failures to factors that pupils can repair.

5. Encourage an accurate match between aspirations and skills level.

6. Praise effort and strategy use to make pupils feel responsible for success and make optimistic explanations of progress.

7. Stress personal rather than normative success - how they are smart not how smart they are and encourage a mastery attitude to achievement.
